Rev. Jana Creighton
Reverend Dr. J. Barry Shatzer
Barry was born and raised in Charleston. He graduated from Presbyterian College where he earned his BA in religion/philosophy in 1972. Later he earned a Master of Theology degree from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia in 1978 and was ordained that year by the PCUS.
He earned his Doctor of Ministry degree from Lexington Theological Seminary in Lexington, Kentucky in 1986. He later went back to school to earn an MBA from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia in 1999.
Barry served pastorates, primarily in Virginia, for 20 years. During that time, he spent time as a volunteer with the American Red Cross and taught white water canoeing, First Aid and CPR for the Red Cross for several years.
He was also very active in International Human Rights, working in the Middle East and the Caribbean. He spent four years as a part time adjunct instructor in religion and history at two universities.
Barry then entered a second career working in accounting primarily in the hospitality industry. During this time, he stayed active in the church, supply preaching and serving as a volunteer Parish Associate for five years in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Barry had to take early retirement because of an auto accident. When he recovered, he returned to South Carolina where he chose to live in Columbia because it was between Charleston and his beloved Alma Mater, Presbyterian College.
He has one son and one granddaughter.
